INTERSECTIONALITY
Intersectionality can be a hard concept to understand, especially if this is your first time hearing about it and how it effects marginalised lives, so to help better your understanding - or if you're intersted in further reading - here is a compiled list of books that tackle intersectionality and are highly informative.
NON-FICTION
This book takes the reader through the history of Black women, feminism and how white women failed to ensure women of colour benefitted from feminism, setting them behind. The book goes through the history of how white women have treated women of colour and how they have ignored them, or actively fought to keep them seperate from, their feminist movements.
bell hooks was an American social activist who theorised that social classifications were interconnected and that ignoring the intersection would further ones oppression and change their experiences. This book is a great introduction to intersectionality for anyone new to feminism.
A collection of essential reading and writing collated by Kimberlé Crenshaw - the woman who coined the term - going through the history of the term 'intersectionality', what has been essential to defining it and how intersectionality has changed the face of social justice activism.
FICTION
The Color Purple documents the traumas and gradual triumph of Celie, an African American teenager raised in rural isolation in Georgia, as she comes to resist the paralyzing self-concept forced on her by others. Celie narrates her life through painfully honest letters to God.
Mary Addison allegedly killed a white baby named Alyssa when she was eight years old. Due to a confluence of race, socioeconomic status, and media sensationalism, Mary is sentenced for the crime and sent to jail. In a jail for adults, she is confined to an isolation cell.
