One of my classmates liked how the aesthetic on my cover tied together in a pleasing way, and was reflected in my double page spread, making my magazine feel connected. However, the text on my double page spread was too small making it harder to read. To improve this next time, I will make my text bigger and test it out on a couple of readers to see if they have issues reading it or if they approve of the size of the text.
Another one of my classmates liked the colour scheme i had chosen and like the way I used split colour in my masthead and on the sell lines and strap lines. They also liked the inkblot overlays i had used on my images and on the background of my double page spread. However, my cover had some empty space that made it feel unfinished and lacklustre. To improve this next time, I will spend time creating puffs to add to my cover as it is an important magazine feature and would’ve made it feel more realistic and less empty.

I think my cover and double page spread were successful because I included many of the features of a magazine cover on my front page and I was able to make my double page spread look interesting whilst also matching the aesthetic I wanted so that it was pleasing for viewers to look at. I also think that I managed to create a memorable brand identity so that it was unique and stood out against magazines of the same genre. I did this by researching other indie game magazines and indie games. I took notes on the magazine layouts, colour schemes and topics of interest and also made a mood board of different indie games to come up with a colour palette that would look good. This research helped me develop my flat plan and first draft of my Indiegest cover with images from pre-existing games, which is when I decided on which fonts to use and how i wanted to stylise my masthead and sell lines. This assisted me in refining who I was trying to appeal to so that I could use that information to create and even better final product that would not only attract my target audience, but would intrigue other readers, too. Then to produce my own original cover, I generated a game concept and asked someone to draw some concept art for the main character of the game to put on my cover and double page spread. Designing my double page spread was a challenge for me because I couldn’t find an example of one from the magazines i had researched so I had to draw inspiration from other magazines and create one. I noticed that many of them had a blank page with just a picture, with not a lot writing on the other page so I tried to achieve that look for my double page spread. If I were to improve on my double page spread I would have used a different piece of art as the highlighted image by asking for another drawing, but because of the short time I had left due to leaving it to be done in the last few days I had, i decided to work with the art I already had. Next time, to improve on my cover, I would think about the social status and needs of my target audience so i could add a puff on my cover that would interest them, to show my understanding of my target audience and what they want.
